Arginine is essential for complete protein synthesis in all tissues, like other amino acids.
Besides, arginine functions as a substrate for the production of nitric oxide in the tissues. As such, it helps smooth muscles to relax (functions as a vasodilator that improves blood flow in many organs), stimulates antibacterial and antiparasitic immunity, prevents platelets from excessive aggregation, and works as a neurotransmitter.
The main source of arginine is meat, to a lesser extent - dairy products and eggs. Plant-based sources are grains, beans, and nuts.
