Lutein is a naturally occurring antioxidant in plants. It belongs to the group of carotenoids, which gives plants their yellow color.
Lutein is only synthesised by plants, but is also found in egg yolks.
In the human body, most lutein accumulates in the macula on the surface of the eye's retina, which enables central vision and is responsible for visual acuity. Prostate is able to store lutein as an antioxidant protecting it from various kinds of oxidative damage.
