Vitamin B3 is the collective name for nicotinic acid and its amide (nicotinamide/niacinamide).
This vitamin is a precursor to the production of a compound in the body called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), which plays an important role in respiration, fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis, as well as in the synthesis of steroid hormones.
Functions of niacin in the body:
- helps in the proper functioning of the nervous system
- contributes to the proper energy metabolism
- helps in maintaining proper emotional processes
