Lutein ist ein natürlich vorkommendes Antioxidans in Pflanzen. Es gehört zur Gruppe der Carotinoide, die Pflanzen ihre gelbe Farbe verleihen.
Lutein wird nur von Pflanzen synthetisiert, kommt aber auch in Eigelb vor.
Im menschlichen Körper reichert sich das meiste Lutein in der Makula auf der Oberfläche der Netzhaut des Auges an, die das zentrale Sehen ermöglicht und für die Sehschärfe verantwortlich ist. Die Prostata ist in der Lage, Lutein als Antioxidans zu speichern, das es vor verschiedenen Arten von oxidativen Schäden schützt.
